How To Improve Our Mental Wellness
It’s common knowledge that mental health is an essential issue for many Americans. Mental illness affects about 1 in 5 adults in the United States, and suicide rates have been steadily increasing since 2000. Many people don’t know how to improve their mental health or what experts suggest, so we’ve put together a list of five ways you can take care of your mental health:
1. Get enough sleep
Many people underestimate the value of a good night’s sleep, but it is critical for your physical and mental well-being. Sleep deprivation can lead to anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease – all of which will affect how you feel about yourself.
- So, how much sleep do you need?
Americans average is less than six hours a night, but the truth is that if it’s difficult to stay awake during the day, then more likely than not, you’re experiencing some level of sleep deprivation. Experts recommend seeking help when symptoms interfere with work or pleasure activities like driving and sex. If these things seem normal to you, then the chances are good that they’re affecting your overall health in ways we don’t yet know enough about! So make sure to get plenty of rest so as not to put too much strain on you.
2. Spend time with positive people
More often, you are shaped by the people around you. So, if they’re negative or toxic – you’re likely to feel that way too. So, make sure to spend time with friends and family who are positive!
What experts suggest:
Spending time with people in your life who are supportive of you will help build a sense of wellness from within. Likewise, spending only or mostly around people who have depression may worsen symptoms for those suffering the disorder. It is essential because challenging social environments can contribute to depressive thoughts or behaviors, leading us back down into that vicious cycle all over again.
3. Exercise
Nothing beats more than doing some regular physical exercise. The benefits of exercise are well documented, and mental health is no exception.
- Exercise increases endorphins – chemicals in the brain that make you feel better about yourself.
- Exercise also releases anxiety hormones and lowers depression levels.
- Regular exercise can help improve sleep quality by regulating your circadian rhythms or natural body clock: our bodies release the hormone melatonin at night to promote drowsiness; sporting a regular routine ensures that we’ll be tired enough for bedtime.
When it is time to go to bed, physical exertion has been shown to increase how quickly this hormonal process occurs, so people will naturally fall asleep faster after their workout. It’s important not only because exercising helps us physically, but also it directly affects how we sleep and how well we feel the next day.
4. Eat healthily
This habit can change your life from the inside because you remember the phrase- “You are what you eat.” Your food choices have a significant impact on how you feel and look. Eating healthy is essential because it eliminates the chances of gaining weight or getting sick and avoiding sugar crashes that can lead to depression which destroys your mental health like nothing.
5. Avoid negative self-talk
Negative self-talk is devastating because it leaves a negative mark on how you view yourself. It doesn’t just make you feel bad about yourself; it also affects how people react to your new mindset and can result in the person feeling less confident. Many of us have been conditioned to think negatively and emphasize our flaws, but this habit should be stopped immediately because it is seriously damaging.
For example- instead of saying “I look fat,” say something like-” I’m not really happy with my body right now.” This response will open up opportunities for positive change because it’s more encouraging and accepting. Negative self-talk leads to mental illness such as depression or anxiety disorders, so don’t allow those thoughts to control your life.
Bonus tip:
See the world the way the highly positive thinkers see. Read about them, watch their videos, works, attend their seminar, webinar, etc., to find out who they are, what makes them mentally strong, how they live their lives, and what you can receive to bring a change in your life. This effort will bring you the inspiration and hope that is necessary for improving your mental health.
